Walkabout Wrexham, which is managed by Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire and funded by the Big Lottery, runs free, volunteer led weekly and monthly walks, for all ages of the public.
Walkabout Wrexham started as a pilot programme in 2001 and has grown from strength to strength. In 2007 Groundwork were fortunate to secure funding from the Big Lottery to develop the scheme until March 2010. The scheme is also linked to Lets Walk Cymru, the nationwide walking scheme managed by the Sports Council for Wales.
The walks are free and are a great opportunity to meet new people and explore the local environment.
Walkabout Wrexham currently provides the public with 10 weekly health walks in many local communities as well as longer monthly walks for those who have progressed in their level of fitness. Walks are also provided for different social groups with 'Toddleabouts' aimed at new parents and their children and the 'Hearts and Minds' walks aimed at individuals with learning difficulties/disabilities. The scheme also works with schools and young people providing Orienteering sessions, Scavenger Hunts and Family walks.
The walks are publicised in a quarterly booklet and 10,000 leaflets are distributed every 3 months to areas such as local libraries, GP surgery's, clinics, dentists and community centres.
